Pepper-spray incident takes on own life on the Web

PHILADELPHIA — Campus police Lt. John Pike probably never thought he'd ever be famous. Certainly not like this.

Pike now is more than a person, more than a news event. He has become a meme.

He has joined the ranks of Achmed the Dead Terrorist, Dramatic Squirrel and Double Rainbow Guy.

Pike is the police officer who, with "OK, be that way" nonchalance, pepper-sprayed students sitting in a Nov. 18 protest at the University of California, Davis. In videos, he shows the spray can to the crowd and then serves its contents upon the squatters as if distributing a malign sacrament.

In this autumn of Occupy, the Davis protest wasn't huge and was nonviolent, if you discount sore throats and eyes. A decade ago, it might have been only a blip on the news horizon.

    Police Struggle As Burglaries Double

The officers admitted they were struggling to keep the number of home burglaries that occur in Richmond, England. Police said the number of burglaries before Christmas has almost doubled.

Last month, officers were called to 205 homes, a sharp increase from the 106 that were reported in December 2009. The police said that for now, this is an area they are struggling with.

In Hounslow, a town near Richmond, they saw a 20 percent drop in burglaries during the same period. In December 2009, the amount of burglaries was 229, but had dropped to 182 in December 2010.

Richmond police said the homes of criminals in general objectives during the dark evening during the winter months when they thought the families were on vacation.

An increase of 35 percent was also reported in the number of home burglaries in Richmond during the months between September and November 2010 compared to 2009 during the same period.
